Read Aloud with Peel Elementary Virtual School

In April, I had the honour of connecting with over 2000 students from Peel Elementary virtual school for a virtual read aloud. As a children’s author and founder of Aura Kids, I was invited to share my book, “Aura’s Gratitude for Nature,” for Sikh Heritage Month and Earth Month. During the session, I had the opportunity to engage with students and answer their questions, which was an enriching experience for both me and the students.

I began the virtual read aloud by introducing myself as a Sikh author and sharing my background. I talked about my business, Aura Kids, which focuses on children’s education and wellbeing, and how diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) is an important aspect of our work. I then read my book, “Aura’s Gratitude for Nature,” which tells the story of a young girl who learns to appreciate nature.

As I read the book, I encouraged the students to participate by asking them questions and engaging with them. After the read aloud, I opened up the floor for questions, and the students had a lot of interesting queries.

One of the students asked me how I came up with the idea for my book. I explained that I was inspired by my daughter who always lit up in nature. Another student asked me how they can start making a positive impact on the environment, and I encouraged them to start small, like picking up litter and recycling. I also talked about how we can all make a difference by being mindful of our actions and making conscious choices.

Another question was about what it’s like to be a children’s author, and I shared some of the joys and challenges of the job, including the creative process, self-publishing, and promoting the book. One student even asked me if I had any advice for aspiring authors, and I encouraged them to write about what they’re passionate about and to never give up on their dreams.

Answering the students’ questions was an enriching experience for me. It was heartwarming to see their curiosity and eagerness to learn. It also gave me the opportunity to connect with them on a personal level and inspire them to make a positive impact on the environment and pursue their dreams.

Overall, my virtual read aloud experience with Peel Elementary virtual school was a fantastic way to teach children about the environment, gratitude, and affirmations. Answering their questions made the experience even more rewarding, and I look forward to more opportunities to connect with young readers and inspire them through literature.
